Der Kaufmann von Venedig (engl. The Comical History of the Merchant of Venice, or Otherwise Called the Jew of Venice) ist eine Komödie William Shakespeares. Sie entstand zwischen 1596 und 1598 und wurde 1600 in der ersten Quartoausgabe veröffentlicht. Die erste bekannte Aufführung fand am 10. Februar 1605 vor König Jakob I. statt. Das Stück spielt nur zum Teil in Venedig; wichtige Szenen spielen in Belmont, einem Landsitz auf dem Festland. Die Handlung beruht auf "Il Pecorone" von Giovanni Fiorentino und der 195. Geschichte der Anekdotensammlung "Gesta Romanorum". (aus wikipedia.de)
